Polka dots and plaid, both patterns have been revisited many a season, and they resurfaced again this summer in St. Tropez. On men, plaids were no longer lumberjack or buffalo red and black. Forget the cozy flannels of winters past, they have been replaced with light fabrics and swim trunks in bright colours and larger dimensions. Classic feminine polka dots have been a favourite pattern in the recent designer collections showed up in St. Tropez as well. Cute short frocks with variations ranging from classic, to heart, to intricate pattern, proved the why the iconic dot maintains its staying power.

Missoni inspired linear patterns in a kaleidoscope of colours popped up as one of St. Tropez’s favoured fine gauge knits or prints. Energetic chevrons, zig-zags, and optical illusion weaves made summertime staples like strapless dresses into unique statement pieces. For the more adventurous, boldly patterned wide leg or flared pants paired with simple tees were an unexpected change from casual denim.

St. Tropez Summer: And Stripes Forever July 20

If last year was the summer of classic sailor stripes, this summer is one of innovation. Although traditional French sailor tops were still plentiful, many of St. Tropez finest donned modern versions. Often stripes were pieced together in veering directions in a graphic op art style. There were also stripe variations in colour and size, especially in flowing fabrics that were anything but nautical.
