Clutch1

The quintessential nocturnal accessory has made an quite the  appearance in daylight hours. On the street the clutch emerges as oversized rectangular bags often tucked under an arm. Although it appears to be an exercise in minimalism, the key to this look is to have the bag remain spacious and functional enough for the daily essentials making it perfect for summer’s relaxed attitude. With a multitude of shapes available from the simple zip up pouch to structured frames it is easy to find a style to slip into your everyday wardrobe.  The day clutch is also an opportunity to embrace some of the season’s biggest trends including colour blocking, men’s wear inspiration, and the perennial warm weather favourite canvas in deck chair stripes. Camel Chic December 21

Colour & Trends, Street Fashion

Camel 1

There seems to be black and grey fatigue! This season the shift towards a warm neutral range has resonated with consumers in London, Paris, Milan and New York. Clean and simple, pared down blazers and coats in shades of camel are the new neutral. They imply understated luxury and ever-lasting classic investment dressing, a far cry from impulsive throw-away fashion purchases. Although accessories can still be black, a few leopard spots add a little seasonal touch. Handbags also become timeless classics with structured suit bags and under arm clutches. It’s time to re-think colour when even sunglasses are following the warming trend. READ MORE +

Could this be IT? December 20

Colour & Trends, Handbags, Street Fashion

IT 1

Ever since the idea of the IT bag has fallen out of favour handbags have not been in the fashion spotlight. It has given handbag designers a chance to refocus their energies and experiment with different silhouettes rather than doing new versions of the soft double handle satchel. Shoulder bags worn cross body have been successful. Clutches and envelopes were often used to accessorize the runway and the newest direction is taking a look at the past with more structured bags. All this has given the customer more options, and  now she has made her choice. The bag most often spotted on the young and beautiful this current season in the fashion capitals of London, Paris and Milan has been a simple north/south shaped tote by Celine. In the summer it was a canvas bag with leather trim, and this fall it morphed into an all leather tote. The most interesting versions are matte snake with a smooth leather trim  and Persian lamb with a matching smooth trim as well.  It seems Celine’s hot designer, Phoebe Philo, is impacting also handbag fashions. Could this be the beginning of a new IT bag era? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, the Celine tote has definitely fashion cred. READ MORE +

Long, Longer, Longest December 17

Colour & Trends, Street Fashion

Longer 1

It is starting to happen – hemlines are drifting downward, and those in the know in London, Paris, Milan and New York are experimenting with longer hemlines. The most forward look this season were sheath dresses just grazing at or right below the knee or straight skirts hitting the leg somewhat lower. Full skirts, either in tailored tweeds or in fluid sheer fabrics were another option. They cinched in the waist with a belt. Almost floor-length skirts or dresses continued the downward trend. Shoes and accessories are starting to change with the hemlines. For the most part closed pumps on a stronger heel were grounding these more voluminous looks. Short boots and grannies worked best for the floor-length look on wedges, high platform heels or flat man-tailored lace-ups. Ballerina flats looked good as well. Handbags and jewelry are also affected by this change in silhouette. Shoulder straps are getting longer, and necklaces are starting to do the same. READ MORE +

Winter Shades December 16

Colour & Trends, Eyewear, Street Fashion, Sunglasses

Winter 1

The sun is always shining when fashionistas are out, and the right pair of sunglasses are a must have accessory. Recent people watching in the fashion capitals yielded some insights into what are the really cool shades this season. There is definitely a trend towards big and oversized. Even the ever so popular aviators got super-sized. Round lenses seemed to be gaining momentum with small nerd wire frames or big plastic googly eyes. A retro 70s mood is not only a big idea in ready-to-wear but eyewear is tapping into the trend as well with classic Raybans and large butterfly shapes with straight top lines. A more contemporary look were black degrade lenses in black plastic frames, certainly an ideal accessory for the all-dressed-in-black. Plastic novelty frames in colour or in novelty patterns such as leopard spots or confetti specks were certainly an eye-catching accessory for the face. READ MORE +
